RN license transfer, renewal & continuing ed

Each state needs a competent medical workforce to meet the needs of its citizens. However, the requirements for some health care professions are not the same in each state. That is why it is important to find out what is required of you as a future or current registered nurse before moving across state lines. Contact information is located at the bottom of this page.

Endorsements

View the Pennsylvania endorsement process. Fees must be paid with credit or debit cards. The official paper endorsement instructions are available on the PA Board application information page.

Below are some of the general requirements for endorsement. View the application and instructions or call the PA State Board for more details.

You will need to complete three hours of board-approved education for child abuse; see the nursing licensure resources.
$100 application fee ($135 + $35 if additionally applying for a temporary license.)
US Social Security number (or completed SSN waiver form)
Official Transcripts (in English)
Original licensure verification. If your state participates in Nursys, you may obtain verification at www.nursys.com

Renewal takes place every two years and costs $65. You may renew online via the PA’s licensing portal or using the board’s renewal information page.

Continuing competency

You will have to take 30 hours of continuing education for renewal. You will not have to submit your continuing education documentation unless you are selected for an audit. Keep your documentation for at least five years.

In-person training

	Blended class	Classroom
Format	This is a personalized and adaptive class completed online with a computer. After the class you will schedule with an instructor to complete the hands-on portion of the class.	This is a traditional classroom class with an instructor.
Course completion	Complete the online portion + hands-on skills session with an AHA Instructor.	Contact a Training Center in your area to sign up for an instructor-led class, see above
Time	The online portion of HeartCode BLS can be completed in approximately 1 to 2 hours. Time to complete the hands-on skills session varies around approximately 60 minutes, depending on your experience level.	A full BLS provider course can take 4.5 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing.
